Antique English Victorian Papier-mâché Needlework Casket

19th century
Description

A most attractive Early 19th Century Antique English Victorian Papier-mâché Ladies Needlework Casket, profusely inlaid with abalone shell pearl and heightened with gilding. The two hinged panels decorated with images of churches, each within a framework of foliage, the handle fixed, the interior retaining it's original lining paper. Sadly now with no Maker's name, but merely the remains of a paper label which can be seen affixed to the base of the piece. Almost certainly made in Wolverhampton, the centre of the papier-mâché industry in England at this period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, papier-mache became a popular medium in Britain for creating lightweight furniture and small decorative wares. Companies such as Jennens & Bettridge patented techniques to strengthen the material and create dark lacquered surfaces suitable for elaborate decoration, shell ornamentation, and gilt finishes.

These caskets were made by pressing paper sheets or pulp mixed with adhesives into moulds under high pressure, then baking them until rigid. The exterior was coated with black lacquer or japan varnish and embellished with inlaid mother-of-pearl shells, metallic gilding, and hand-painted varnish details.

Authentic pieces exhibit dense construction with a characteristic cold, smooth lacquer surface, rather than modern plastic or thin wood. Look for signs of hand-executed gilding wear, natural iridescent variation in the mother-of-pearl, and period-correct brass hinges or locks.

Place the casket on a polished sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to act as a focal accent piece. Pairing the dark lacquered surface with neutral textures, brass accents, or framed botanical artwork highlights the historical craftsmanship within contemporary settings.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, excess heat, and humid environments, which can cause the lacquer or paper layers to warp or split. Clean softly using a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding water, harsh chemical detergents, or abrasive waxes that could damage the delicate gilding and lacquer coat.
