Rare Antique Kingwood & Tulipwood Basket Shaped Box - Paris Dated 1855

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

What makes this one a particularly special example is the underside where the stamp can be found for the Paris Exhibition " Admis A L'Exposition Universelle 1855, Paris"; signed B.J and Brevette S.G.D.G. (Patented, the S.D.G.D meaning "sans garantie du gouvernement" or without a governmental guarantee). There is also another paper label.

A very rare piece (possibly unique), this exquisite box is a "must-have" for the advanced collector. The craftsmanship is extraordinary with the most intricate parquetry inlay created from Kingwood and Tulipwood in a basket weave design with central all-over six point stars.

This is actually created by the carcass being formed with Rosewood being soaked and molded into the shape of the basket (this base can be seen from the interior - in the Rosewood), the decorative inlay is then applied to this base once set; no secondary timber is used at all in the construction, creating this very fine, delicate example.

The lid has a thicker piece of base Rosewood and then decorated in the same way. The lid has a sprung hinge and snaps shut to close.

A really superb heirloom quality box in excellent condition, the lid measuring 8 1/2" x 3" and standing 7" tall to top of swing handle.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
