A pair of Victorian-style beige porcelain figurines depicting a young boy and girl surrounded by flowers, created in the early 20th century by the Ernst Wahliss factory. The festively dressed children are leaning against a hedge adorned with white lilies, with large, natural-looking roses at their feet. Their clothing is hand-decorated with gold trim elements. The figurines are finely hand-painted with excellent detailing, including intricate floral patterns and clearly defined facial features. The bases are marked with the red Teplitz Wien mark.
Teplitz refers to art pottery produced by various companies in the Teplitz-Turn area of Bohemia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One such company was the Alexandra Works, founded by Ernst Wahliss. The factory operated under this name for only 24 years, making its products very rare and highly sought after by collectors of Bohemian porcelain.
Ernst Wahliss was born in 1836 and became a leading Vienna retailer in porcelain and ceramic goods. His Vienna store, established in 1863, was so successful that he was able to open additional stores in major European cities, such as London, and supply ceramics of the highest quality to many European royal families.
In 1894, Wahliss took over the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz (now in modern-day Czechia) and renamed it Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik. The company produced large quantities of various wares and received numerous awards at exhibitions. Near the end of his career, Wahliss abandoned his design work to move to the rural town of Velden, where he opened a luxury hotel. He passed away in 1900. Two years later, his sons, Hans and Erich, purchased 600 molds from the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna and began producing reproductions of Vienna porcelain. In 1905, the company was renamed Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss. The factory was acquired by Gerhard Martin Wahliss in 1907. In 1910, the factory focuse
...d on faience production. The factory temporarily closed due to World War I and, in 1921, Alexandra Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss became part of Porcelain Union United Porcelain Factories as a branch of Turn-Teplitz. In 1925, it became part of Porzellanfabrik Union AG, and production ended in 1929.
