Antique WWI ART NOUVEAU Inlaid Mahogany Barograph & Barometer Dial & Drawer
DESCRIPTION:
This is a wonderful quality and very rare antique Art Nouveau barograph which has the rear feature of a barometer dial with thermometer and is exquisitely inlaid. It also has a wonderful military interest having a presentation plaque from WWI from the Officers of the 2nd Battalion London Rifle Brigade.
The case is made from mahogany and has lovely deep bevelled glass to all four sides and the top. The top, the drawer and the four corners are inlaid with stringing. The front drawer and the two front columns are also beautifully inlaid with a stunning Art Nouveau design. The movement is 8 day which is a good quality and is complete with it''s winding key which is integral with the movement.
The barograph bears a presentation plate ''C.G. WAUGH, ESG IN RECOLLECTION OF MANY KINDNESSES TO THEOFFICERS OF THE 2nd BATTALION LONDON RIFLE BRIGADE DURING THEIR STAY IN HAYWARDS HEATH NOV 1914 - MAY 1915''''. Having researched this we found that the plaque ties up with the history of the Regiment as follows : : ''2/5th (City of London) Battalion (London Rifle Brigade)
Formed in London in September 1914. By December 1914, had moved to Haywards Heath and placed under orders of 2/1st London Brigade in 2/1st London Division. Moved to Norwich in May 1915 and formation retitled as 174th Brigade in 58th (2/1st London) Division. Moved on to Ipswich next month and then to Sutton Veny in July 1916. 25 January 1917 : landed at Le Havre. 6 February 1918 : disbanded at Moreuil.''.
The barograph takes barometric measurements which in turn are recorded on a paper record sheet which is mounted on a clockwork revolving cylinder, the ink nib draws a line on the chart as the pressure rises and falls. The cylinder makes one full revolution in one week. This barograph also has the rare feature of an additional barometer dial which displays the barometric pressure and has a lovely silvered
...circular dial which also has a thermometer to the bottom of the dial''.
The barograph and barometer are in full working order. Although not part of the sale, the barograph comes complete with spare charts and ink.
