Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, silver desk thermometers were produced as functional items for private libraries and offices. Often manufactured by prestigious silversmiths, these instruments served both practical temperature measurement needs and displayed refined craftsmanship on executive writing desks.

These instruments typically consist of a solid sterling silver or silver-plated housing frame, etched glass capillary tubes filled with mercury or coloured spirit, and engraved temperature scales. Original presentation pieces were frequently sold in fitted leather cases lined with velvet and silk.

Authentic British silver items feature a complete set of hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the makers mark, standard mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), town mark, and date letter. Engraved maker details inside the fitted case lid also help verify authenticity.

An antique silver thermometer can be placed alongside leather-bound books on a bookshelf, set atop a modern or period office desk, or displayed open in its original velvet case on a console table to create a curated focal point.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish silver surfaces using a specialised silversmiths cloth to remove oxidisation. Avoid applying liquid cleaners directly near the glass capillary tube or paper backings, and store the item in a temperature-stable environment away from direct sunlight.
