Set of 6 Antique English Georgian Pewter Plates ~ William Wright

18th century
Description

A good set of six Late 18th Century Antique English Georgian reeded edge Pewter Plates, each bearing the touch of William Wright of Little Minories, London, { Cotterell O.P. 5310 }, together with a fine set of hallmarks. Wright was working in the mid to late 18th Century, however, each of these plates is also stamped ENGLAND, which normally would indicate a post 1892 date, thus raising a question mark over their true age. After careful consideration, we have concluded that this latter mark is clearly a later addition and have thus catalogued the plates accordingly.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian pewter tableware refers to domestic dining and display items crafted in Britain during the reign of Kings George I through George IV, between 1714 and 1830. These items were widely used across households as durable alternatives to wooden trenchers before ceramics became universally affordable.

18th-century pewter was an alloy composed primarily of tin, combined with small amounts of copper, lead, or antimony to increase hardness. The alloy was cast into stone or metal moulds and finished on a lathe to refine the rim and surface profile.

Authentic Georgian pewter pieces often feature struck touchmarks or hallmarks on the underside or rim identifying the pewterer. They typically display lathe-turning marks, a soft, heavy feel, and natural oxidisation or surface patination consistent with age.

Antique pewter plates can be arranged as a vertical grouping on a wall, mounted inside a open kitchen dresser, or layered horizontally along a sideboard top. Their neutral grey tone complements both minimalist contemporary surfaces and rustic timber backgrounds.

Dust antique pewter regularly with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive polishes that strip the historic patina. Store pieces in a dry climate to prevent moisture accumulation and chemical corrosion, often referred to as pewter pest.
