Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French mirrors are characterised by ornate carved crestings, shaped top apertures, and hand-painted or gesso-gilded finishes. They often feature classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, shell designs, and subtle etched borders on the glass.

Frames were typically constructed from carved hardwoods like oak or pine, coated with gesso, and finished with paint or gold leaf. The mirror plates were made of silvered glass, often displaying slight foxing or oxidisation over time.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age on the reverse, such as dark pine backing boards, hand-cut joinery, and natural degradation of the silvering behind the glass. The carved elements usually display subtle irregularities from hand-tooling.

Positioning the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece or a contemporary dining room sideboard provides a structural focal point. The painted timber tones contrast effectively against contemporary dark paint palettes or neutral plastered walls.

Dust the carved frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid flaking original paint or gesso. Clean the mirror plate with a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water, avoiding spray cleaners near the timber edges.
