ANTIQUE #SA1086200

A Charming Schoenau & Hoffmeister Bisque Headed Marotte C1890

£180    $231    €217
An antique Schoenau & Hoffmeister bisque headed marotte doll. When you hold it by the handle and turn it the bells ring. The marotte was originally a staff topped by a smiling head with bells attached. It was shaken by the King''s jester to punctuate his speech. In Philpott''s Dictionary of Puppetry, a marotte is defined as: Originally a fool''s stick. The bisque head sits on the top of the rod which is covered with a costume or ribbons which end in the bells. A lovely collectors'' piece.
