A Charming Schoenau & Hoffmeister Bisque Headed Marotte C1890

Description

An antique Schoenau & Hoffmeister bisque headed marotte doll. When you hold it by the handle and turn it the bells ring. The marotte was originally a staff topped by a smiling head with bells attached. It was shaken by the King's jester to punctuate his speech. In Philpott's Dictionary of Puppetry, a marotte is defined as: Originally a fool's stick. The bisque head sits on the top of the rod which is covered with a costume or ribbons which end in the bells. A lovely collectors' piece.
