Stunning Mahogany Bracket Clock, Gay & Vicarino Maker, Imposing Piece

19th century
Sold by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection this extremely fine quality mahogany bracket clock from the esteemed makers Gay and Vicarino. This fully restored clock has a decorative brass dial comprising of a silvered chapter ring with decorative spandrels to the corners. A Brocot regulating adjuster lies above the 12 numeral within the polished brass plate and original spade hands compliment the appearance.

The large and impressive case stands on involute original brass feet with caryatids to each side of the door. A band of brass scrolling leafwork surmounts the lower plinth and original carrying handles and a decorative mask to the case arched top and also the lower pediment, with four original urn finials proudly standing to the top, add to the majestic appearance. Each case side contains brass fretwork backed with striking red fabric and the rear door is similarly adorned. The front lock is original and still works with a later key and the bevelled square glass rounds off a truly stunning appearance.

The eight day ting-tang striking movement has been stripped and overhauled and strikes each quarter on two coiled gongs and the full hour on a single gong. The clock benefits from my three year guarantee.

This piece is a fantastic piece of furniture let alone a magnificent clock and dates from circa 1875, shortly after the two makers met and collaborated in Paris, relocating from London. Emile Gay was listed in 1861 with premises at 20 Red Lion Square, London. He became associated with Vicarino and together they opened a workshop in Paris at 5 rue Beranger. Gay became a member of Chambre Syndicale de l’Horlogerie de Paris which was composed of prominent clockmakers in Paris who met regularly and published a journal Revue Chronométrique, documenting their activities. The pages of this journal contained many reports of participation of Gay, Vicarino et Comp. In sponsoring awards and recognition for apprentices and workers employed by those clockmakers.
