A Superb Watercolour Portrait Of Prince Albert Of Saxe Coburg And Gotha By Sir William Charles Ross, Ara
£495 $630 €597
A fine quality watercolour portrait of Prince Albert of Saxe Coburg and Gotha, painted by William Charles Ross (1794-1860). It is painted in watercolours and on the reverse of the painting it is signed W C Ross. There is also a label to the backboard (see image). The painting (including the frame) measures 38cm high x 32cm width and the actual painting is 24cm x 19cm.
Ross was born in London and descended from a Scottish family. At an early age the young Ross showed a great ability in art and in 1808 he was admitted into the schools of the Royal Academy, then in 1808 he received the silver medal for an original drawing from life. For some years afterwards his exhibited works were mainly of the classical character. In 1837 Queen Victoria and the Duchess of Kent sat for him and in succeeding years the Prince Consort and the royal children were painted by him. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1838 and in 1843 he was made a Royal Academician and he was knighted in 1842. He died at his home in 1860 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery.
