Scottish ebony and hallmarked silver walking stick or cane with an unusual agate sphere pommel. The silver collar is trumpet shaped so the the sphere can sit into it.
We''ve had these before but never with such clear, geometric colouration within the stone.
The silver collar was assayed in London as shown in the pictures, date letter for 1903 and makers mark for Jonathan Howell & Co Ltd of London.
The silver collar is decorated with repousse work and scrolls with a cartouche to the front engraved:-
''To Dr JA Campbell from WC McC 12-8-03.''
The agate is beautiful with bold swirls of colour through the stone. Much better in daylight than in the pictures.
Strong ebony shaft which compliments the agate perfectly.
It measures 92 cm 36 1/4 inches in length, the pommel is 3.2 cm 1 1/4 inches wide.
The ferrule is of cast brass and in good order.
It''s in excellent condition but with some signs of age and use as you''d expect at this age.
Some surface marks to the silver as shown but no damage or repairs.
The sphere is in excellent condition with no damage or repairs.
Good looking stick and strong enough to support a good weight.
