Antique Figurine "Secret of the Child," Royal Dux by Alois Hampel, C. 1919

1900 - 1920
Description

Royal Dux porcelain, produced in Duchcov, Czech Republic since 1853, was founded by Eduard Eichler. Initially, the company focused on simple white tableware but soon began experimenting with color and decoration. The company experienced a period of prosperity, producing goods primarily from terracotta, faience, and majolica. Designs inspired by products from Copenhagen, Worcester, and Sèvres were highly successful, earning the company the Silver Medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1878. Following Eduard Eichler's death in 1887, his widow Amalia Eichler continued to run the company until 1890. By the 1870s, Royal Dux began producing figurines, which became the main focus of the company by the early 20th century.

Today, Royal Dux figurines are highly collectible, and the company continues to produce both porcelain tableware and statuettes. The Art Nouveau period marked a significant era for the company, with chief modeller Alois Hampel leading the design efforts. Under Hampel's guidance, the factory achieved remarkable success, winning the Grand Prix at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, the Silver Medal at the 1906 Milan Exhibition, and the Gold Medal at the Liberec Exhibition. Some products introduced during this time are still in production today.

This large and impressive Royal Dux figurine, designed by Alois Hampel, depicts a mother and child. The reverse is embossed with Hampel's monogram, 'AH'. The artistic skill of the designer and Royal Dux artisans is evident in the meticulous execution of this figural group. The mother's expression as she listens to the child, the girl's pose, and the color scheme all showcase that this piece is not a product of mass production but a work of art crafted by master hands.
