Antique Large Solid Silver Snuff Box Cartouche Shaped With Profuse Hand Engravings - London 1842

We are delighted to offer this wonderfully decorative and uniquely shaped Victorian solid silver snuff box made in London in 1842 by John Howes.

The box''s substantial ''blocky'' proportions and unique shape are certainly captivating and allow for each side to be profusely embellished. Each ''panel'' (even the base) has been meticulously hand engraved with a complex motif of scrolled acanthus leaves, animals and geometric motifs. The top section also features a crest in the centre.

The gauge of silver used to craft this box is also wonderful with thick walls on all sides amounting to a quality feel in hand upon holding. One can imagine the attention to detail, labour and craftsmanship that would have gone into making just one box - a true testament to the quality and craftsmanship of a bygone era.

The interior is silver gilt (gold on top of solid silver) which not only serves a wonderful aesthetic contrast to the exterior but protects silver from tarnishing from the content...
