Description

Large-scale decorative early C19th Regency period carved gilt-wood pier mirror .

The architectural form break-front multi-stepped pediment with cross-ribbon and multiple sphere decoration above a band of carved ‘lambs-tongue’ moulding. A rectangular ‘trumeau’ panel of punched or pounced ground , with raised foliate or oak-leaf decoration and a large central regal lion’s-mask head.

The sides having solomonic twisted architectural column supports topped with corinthian style capitals . The original silvered mirror plate with atmospheric degradation and foxing, having an ebonised slip surround.

The whole mounted on ebonised ball feet. The verso with original panel back-boards .

In excellent original condition, the original gilded surface having achieved a mellow, soft patina .

In the manner of Thomas Fentham (1774-1825) of The Strand , London.

A Regency pier mirror is a tall, vertical wall mirror produced in the early nineteenth century, originally proportioned to fit the masonry wall space (pier) between two windows or above a pier table.

These mirrors were constructed with softwood or pine frames coated in gesso and clay bole, finished with applied gold leaf using water-gilding techniques, and often incorporated ebonised timber slips and silvered glass.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved timber elements, natural wear showing reddish clay bole beneath the gilding, hand-drawn glass plates with light oxidation, and traditional joinery on the timber backing.

Place the mirror above a dining room sideboard or fireplace mantelpiece to create visual depth, balance architectural scale, and reflect natural light across contemporary or traditional spaces.
