Another good Early / Mid 18th Century Antique English Georgian Pewter Dish or Charger of unusually large size and fine colour, this one with with single reeded edge. The reverse bearing the marks of John Duncumb of Birmingham, { Cotterell 1465 }, who is there described as having been refused admission by redemption to the London Pewterers Company in 1706. This together with the initials, S above N E, which latter would suggest that the piece was perhaps originally a wedding gift. Cotterell, writing almost a century ago, at a time when the fashion for “Elizabethan” oak furniture together with period accessories such as pewter was at its height, expresses some reservations regarding the products of the Duncombe family, suggesting that spurious reproductions of their work had perhaps entered the market. Be that as it may, there can be no doubt as to the authenticity of this lovely old charger which clearly dates from circa 1730 and which as always comes with our unconditional Guarantee and Warranty.
