Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1890s.

The author of this composition is the well-known James Wilson, a Parian ware manufacturer. His career as an artist was short (1879-1897). He worked at the Etruscan Works, High Street Longton, one of the Six Towns of Stoke-on-Trent, since 1879. In 1883, James Wilson, having erected new works in Marsh Street, transferred his Parian works, formerly in High Street, and added the manufacture of china to his other business. He is known for his works of Parian porcelain, including fine figurines and busts of famous people, like former US president James A. Garfield.

'Parian' is the name now used for a form of porcelain developed in England in the early 1840s. The porcelain body was made to resemble marble, and when first introduced, it was heralded as an affordable way for people to bring smaller-scale copies of large marble statues into their homes.
