Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Termes and caryatids are decorative architectural supports or pilasters carved with human busts or figures that taper downwards into bases. Popularised during the 16th-century French Renaissance, particularly by designer Hugues Sambin, they were integrated into grand timber furniture, panelling, and doorways.

During the 16th century, artisans primarily carved these elements from dense hardwoods such as walnut or oak using hand chisels and gouges. The surfaces were hand-finished and waxed, resulting in deep relief carvings with pronounced shadows and detailed naturalistic forms.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-carving irregularities, historical wear patterns, shrinkage around the grain, and deep, uneven wax oxidisation. The backs often exhibit hand-sawn tool marks and original joinery cuts rather than uniform machine work.

These carved relief panels can be mounted on wall surfaces as standalone sculptural art or integrated alongside contemporary fitted cabinetry. Mounting them in pairs or sets creates strong vertical symmetry and texture in transitional or traditional room schemes.

Carved walnut panels should be dusted regularly using a soft brush to reach inside low-relief crevices. A light application of clear beeswax polish once a year protects the timber, preserves the natural patina, and prevents wood drying without darkening the details.
