Unusual Japanese Gold Lacquer Tebako ( Incense Container )

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most unusual Edo Period (1603-1868) gold lacquer Tebako (small box for incense), this delightful little box is finely decorated with a pavillion upon a lake within a landscape setting, the pavilion rests on stilts beneath a hanging pine tree, the most unusual feature being a sliding window which reveals a pair of characters sat beneath draped curtains, possibly playing the popular game of ''go'' upon a chequered board. The box finely Nashi -ji lacquered within and to the underside, the rims are pewter and the base carries an old collectors label. The box came direct from a private USA collection and was accompanied with a label that indicated it was Momoyama period 1568-1600, if that were the case it would be remarkably well preserved.
