Antique Solid Silver Georgian Snuff Box With Ornate Acanthus Thumbpiece - London 1837

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Artisan Antiques

We are delighted to offer this fine quality Georgian solid silver snuff box made in London in 1837 by Charles Rawlings & William Summers.

Rawlings & Summers'' wares and fine boxes in particular usually of a higher quality than the norm and this box is certainly of no exception.

In spite of the box being a fairly regular size snuff box, the overall quality, gauge and attention to detail are wonderful. The classical Georgian engine turning on all sides is crisp and tight with one blank shied cartouche on top.

The highlight of the exterior is the ornate thumpiece which aids in opening the lid. It features an applied cast, engraved and stippled acanthus design, a laborious and time-consuming extra feature on what could easily be a much simpler utilitarian design.

The interior features lovely gilding (gold on top of solid silver) which not only serves a wonderful aesthetic contrast to the exterior but protects silver from tarnishing from the contents held within.

A wonderful presentation engraving with beautiful lettering has been hand engraved on the interior lid.

Perfect for collecting or practical storage of snuff, mints, medication etc - this box serves as a fine example of a quality Georgian snuff box.

A full set of English hallmarks are present on the interior base with matching marks on the lid.
