Charles-Jean Agard was born in Dordogne in 1886. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later in the studio of Leon Bonnat, as well as under fellow artists such as Eugene Carriere, Puvis de Chavannese and Alfred-Phillippe Roll.
Charles''s first exhibition was held at the Salon des Independants in 1893, and during the 1890''s, he exhibited amongst group shows alongside Henri Lebasque and Georges Seurat. Between 1914 and 1942, he routinely exhibited at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts which had been re-established by artists including Puvis de Chavannes in 1890.
Charles''s landscapes show the influence of Post Impressionism, mainly painted in Limousin and Ile de France, near his home Nesle.
