Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1800s.

The slanted front panel and the top lid have both been framed in a double pewter inlaid border. The top also has a highly decorative inlaid escutcheon which houses the working tasseled key. Once opened the fitted interior is revealed with two small slanted compartments which would have stored pen nibs and the like, the long lidded compartment for pens, seal sealing wax etc and a removable pen tray which also has storage below. There are also two perfectly fitting brass topped inkwells (later replacements).
The top section of this opens to reveal a Mahogany lined interior for storage of stationery and letters.

Dating to around 1840, early Victorian in era, this highly decorative example remains in excellent condition. Measuring 13 7/8" x 9 7/8" x 3 3/4" deep at rear.
