Available for sale from Big Sky Fine Art in the English county of Dorset, this original oil painting is by Charles Simpson and dates from the 1930s.
 
The painting is presented and supplied in a contemporary and sympathetic wood frame (which is shown in these photographs) mounted using conservation materials and behind non-reflective Artglass AR 70™ glass. The previous ply backboard has been retained and is secured onto the new replacement backboard for posterity.
 
This vintage painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display.
 
The painting is signed lower right.
 
Previously with Harris & Sons, 70 George Street, Plymouth, Devon in July 1936.
 
Charles Walter Simpson, known as Walter, was a leading figure in the Newlyn and St Ives art colonies in the early part of the twentieth century. He is best known for his bird paintings, and those depicting horse sports. He worked in oils, watercolours and tempera.
 
Largely self-taught, he also trained in Paris and with the likes of friends and tutors G.F.Watts, H.W.B.Davis, Sir Alfred Munnings, Lucy Kemp-Welch and Stanhope Forbes.
 
He married the portrait artist Ruth Alison and they split their lives between London and West Cornwall, where for a while they ran the St. Ives School of Art and played a major role in the community.
 
Simpson regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1906 onwards, and also at the Royal Institute and the Paris Salon, where he won a Silver Medal in 1923. He went on to win Gold Medals at the San Francisco International Exhibition of 1914 and the VIII Olympiad at Paris in 1924.
 
Simpson was also an author and illustrator of various books.
