Charles Walter Simpson, known as Walter, was a leading figure in the Newlyn and St Ives art colonies in the early part of the twentieth century. He is best known for his bird paintings, and those depicting horse sports. He worked in oils, watercolours and tempera.
Largely self-taught, he also trained in Paris and with the likes of friends and tutors G.F.Watts, H.W.B.Davis, Sir Alfred Munnings, Lucy Kemp-Welch and Stanhope Forbes.
He married the portrait artist Ruth Alison and they split their lives between London and West Cornwall, where for a while they ran the St. Ives School of Art and played a major role in the community.
Simpson regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1906 onwards, and also at the Royal Institute and the Paris Salon, where he won a Silver Medal in 1923. He went on to win Gold Medals at the San Francisco International Exhibition of 1914 and the VIII Olympiad at Paris in 1924.
Simpson was also an author and illustrator of various books.
Today, his work is represent
...ed in a large number of public collections, in the UK and New Zealand.
