Second prize in “old Carthusian handicap”.
 
Charterhouse pupils hav Eb always been known as “old carthusians”. The schools founder Thomas Sutton was one of the wealthiest men in Jacobean England.
 
In 1611, year of his death Sutton made provision for the establishment of a hospital for pensioners and school for boys, the building’s purchased in london once housed a Carthusian monestry … hence carthusians.
 
By 1906 the school had moved from london to Surrey .
 
This much treasured claret jug is bulbous squat form .
 
Manufactured by Mappin and Webb, the name synonymous with quality .
 
The bowl of the jug is lead Crystal , cut in hobnail design and t he triple silver “princes plate” top and handle are in perfect condition.
 
Clearly engraved , revealing its social history…
