Wheeler Mahogany Gossip Chair

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming mahogany gossip chair by Wheelers of Arncroach in Fife. The classic Chippendale style back has an open splat and curved top ends. The drop seat pads are upholstered in a sweet tapestry style fabric which is clean with no rips or wear however if the fabric is not to your liking it would be simple to recover to suit any décor. It stands on splay legs to the back with tapering square legs to the front united by an H stretcher and a cross stretcher at the back. Like all antiques there imperfections however the chair is sturdy and is a wonderful rich colour. A wonderful example of Scottish history to have in the home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gossip chairs are low-seated, armless side chairs developed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, designed primarily for informal conversation in bedrooms or private sitting rooms.

These period chairs are typically constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-carved joinery, H-stretchers, and drop-in seats upholstered in wool needlepoint or woven tapestry.

Key identification markers include intricate pierced back splats, scrolled crest rails, corner blocks on the seat framing, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Single antique accent chairs function effectively as functional decorative accents in entrance halls, bedroom corners, or alongside contemporary desks to add visual weight and contrast.

Timber surfaces should be preserved with regular applications of beeswax paste and kept away from direct heat sources, while needlepoint upholstery requires gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment.
