American 8 day oak cased ''Vernon'' mantel clock circa 1890, by the Ansonia Clock Co. Highly carved and decorated case with half turned pillars and applied mouldings. Gilt brass bezel with flat chamfered glass over ivorine chapter ring with gilt brass centre. Black Gothic hours and ornate black steel hands and slow/fast adjuster at 12 o''clock. Spring driven, gong striking skeleton brass movement with original pendulum, and stamped ''Ansonia Clock Co.'' and ''Patented - June 18, 1882''.

The Ansonia Clock Company, formed in 1851 and operated as a high-quality company until the 1920s. A series of bad decisions and the Depression forced the sale of the company to Soviet Russia in 1928. The company was originally housed in Darby, Connecticut until 1854 when the factory burned. The company moved production to Ansonia.
