Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape and genre paintings often combined detailed depictions of the natural countryside with narrative scenes of rural life. These works typically emphasised rustic subject matter, natural light effects, and idyllic outdoor activities.

Artists during this period primarily applied oil-based pigments onto stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. Paint was built up using techniques ranging from thin glazes to heavier impasto, often sealed with a natural resin varnish.

Authentic period paintings often exhibit natural varnish yellowing, fine crackle patterns in the paint layer known as craquelure, and signs of age on the reverse canvas or stretcher frame. Artist signatures, gallery labels, or framer marks on the reverse side also assist with identification.

A traditional oil landscape works effectively hung above a mantelpiece or sideboard, or incorporated into a curated gallery wall. Displaying historic framed art against neutral wall surfaces creates a balanced focal point in modern rooms.

Keep oil paintings out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking or timber movement. Dust lightly using a soft, dry brush, and consult a professional art conservator for deeper cleaning or varnish restoration.
