Antique Figurine Edme Samson Hobo, Mid 19th Century

19th century
Description

Beautifully modeled and hand-painted porcelain figurine of a tramp from the French manufacturer Edme Samson, France. The figurine is glazed and looks very natural. The man is wearing torn trousers and trampled boots while also sporting epaulettes and a hat with a feather. It looks like he has known better times. On his hip is a frying pan, and in a shoulder bag is a chicken waiting for its time. Perhaps he is one of the soldiers of the defeated army of Napoleon, returning from the Russian campaign?

We assume that this figurine was copied from the work of the oldest French company Niderville. The base is branded Edme Samson, copying the Meissen mark.

The French porcelain factory Samson, founded by Edme Samson in Paris in 1845, produced high-quality reproductions of all types of porcelain, including Meissen, Chantilly, Chelsea, Derby, and Chinese porcelain. These reproductions were created with great skill and can be difficult to distinguish from the originals. At a certain stage of development, some Samson copies began to be valued at the same level as the originals.

Samson porcelain gained a reputation for finely rendered and carefully modeled porcelain figurines, and this reputation is still held by collectors today.

Dimensions: Height 16 cm, width 6 cm, depth 6 cm, weight 213 grams

Condition: A small chip on the rim of the pan, which hangs on the right side. Otherwise, excellent antique condition - no visible signs of damage, cracks, or restoration. The paint, gilding, and enamel are mostly preserved in excellent condition.

Please study the attached photographs carefully as they are an integral part of this description. The item will be dispatched with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labor, packaging, and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
