I just love this small Charles 11 English ''joyned'' walnut gateleg table from the 17thc....I found it at a showground fair, outside in the pouring rain at 5.00 am in the morning...looking very sad and uncared for....the dealer said to me, ''I think it is early...probably Georgian''....and I am thinking, I know exactly how early it is...and it is not Georgian..!...anyway of course I bought it and it has given me so much pleasure and many hours of careful work bringing it back to life....I was so thrilled to see , the original feet....also three 17thc handmade butterfly hinges...and then I saw the one original 17thc ''butt hinge''....the only one remaining and of course confirming the date to the last quarter of the 17thc....the wonderful quality turning on the legs...a combination of baluster, ring and bobbin turning, which go to show so well the skill of the joiner....the original stretchers all have delicate double and single scratched line moulding into the top....and then there is the beautiful colour period walnut goes....a sort of rich claret colour....it is in very good original condition and the only ''historic'' modification is that probably, when it was made or certainly shortly afterwards the new owner requested that the two rails beneath the top at each end were reduced in depth , to enable people to sit at each end....the rails have patinated over, where they were cut and so become part of this lovely table''s journey....I think you can tell I am very passionate about early period furniture and saving beautiful tables like this...!
