Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Trencher salts are small, open condiment vessels designed to hold salt directly on the dining table, popular during the 18th century. Named after the medieval wooden trencher board, these pieces reflect the George II periods emphasis on clean geometric forms and solid silver construction.

Georgian trencher salts were typically forged or cast from sterling silver (925 standard). Silversmiths raised the central well from a single sheet or cast the stepped base sections, finishing them with hand-engraved inscriptions, monograms, or family crests.

Authentic pieces feature period British hallmarks, including the lion passant, monarch profile or duty mark, town mark, date letter, and makers mark. Genuine 18th-century examples display slight asymmetrical variations from hand-crafting, along with period-appropriate block or feathered engraving styles.

These versatile silver vessels can be displayed on a dining sideboard, integrated into a formal table setting, or repurposed on a dressing table to hold small items of jewellery or pins.

Salt is highly corrosive to silver and can cause pitting if left inside the well for extended periods. Clean the salts after use with warm water and mild soap, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth, and polish periodically using a specialist silver foam or cloth to control tarnish and oxidisation.
