A Large Parian Figurine “Comedy”, by W. Boyton Kirk, Worcester, C.1853.

19th century
Description

A large antique parian figurine “Comedy” modelled by Irish talented designer/sculptor W.B. Kirk. for Kerr & Binns, it was the owners of Worcester at the time. He created a couple of classical figurines “Comedy” and “Tragedy”. We are offering you the “Comedy” figurine. Smiling barefoot young woman with a wreath of roses on her head, putting her right hand with the piper behind her head in her left hand she holds the mocking mask. This piece of parian figurine made by true craftsmen, the accuracy of detail is remarkable. It is important to note the size of the sculpture - sculptures of this size were usually used to attract the attention of those present in large rooms, in the homes of wealthy people. Introduced at Worcester in 1853, Parian only needed one firing to produce a cleanable material with a matt finish. Parian was used to make small versions of Classical sculpture at an affordable price and was in great demand by the new middle classes. Many sentimental and moral subjects were popular alongside National Heroes and characters from mythology.

Only a handful of people were involved in the design and modelling of shapes at Worcester in the 1850’s. Figure modelling was a new introduction at Worcester. The Irish talented sculptor William Boyton Kirk (1824–1900) was employed from 1852 working in Worcester as designer. He was the second son of the sculptor Thomas Kirk and trained under his supervision. He exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy for the first time in 1844, becoming an associate member in 1850. Among his notable works is the figure of Justice on the Belfast Courthouse. For Worcester company, he designed the "Shakespeare" dessert service which was exhibited at the Dublin Exhibition of 1853 and many others equally interesting works. He illustrated an 1853 edition of Shakespeare's “Midsummer night's dream”. On the base the printed Worcester mark, but without crown. It will be added to company mark in 1862.

Dimensions: Height: 44 cm, Width: 18 cm, Depth: 18 cm, Weight: 2866 grams

Condition: Part of the flute and two flowers on the head show traces of overpainting and appear to have been professionally restored.. However, this minor restoration does not affect the overall impression. There are traces of firing on the elbow of the figurine and on her dress.

Otherwise, this rare figurine is in excellent antique condition.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.
