Georgian Silhouette of a Gentleman C1785

18th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A George III era silhouette of a young gentleman dated 1785 and painted by G Muriel Smith according to a label on the reverse. The image is painted in black on paper. It is mounted in its original easel back frame, inside a brass oval surround. It also has an acorn leaf loop for hanging on the wall. The image is of a young man, in a formal double breasted jacket, with brass or silver buttons and an elaborate cravat. The hair is tied back in a beribboned pigtail. Judging from the clothing, this may well be a young naval officer, a lieutenant or similar, and this would have been a keepsake for family or a loved one. It is in excellent condition. Image dimensions 6x4.5cm.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silhouette portraits became widespread during the 18th century as an accessible alternative to painted miniatures. They feature profile outlines painted or cut from paper, depicting sitters in side view during the Georgian era.

Traditional silhouettes were rendered using black watercolour ink or cut paper mounted onto contrasting card. They were housed in ebonised wooden or papier-mache frames fitted with glass, brass bezels, and cast suspension mounts.

Authentic period pieces exhibit period-accurate hairstyles, cravats, and attire details, occasionally featuring subtle gilding or bronzing. Natural age-related yellowing of the backing paper, slight oxidisation of metal fittings, and period framing techniques also indicate age.

Small profile portraits integrate into gallery wall arrangements alongside modern monochrome prints or drawings. They also function as accent pieces when placed on narrow wall surfaces, bookshelf ledges, or alongside framed mirrors.

Keep framed paper miniatures away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent fading and foxing. Clean the frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid applying liquid glass cleaner directly to avoid moisture ingress.
