Exquisite Georgian Silver Caddy Spoon by James Collins, Birmingham 1825

Description

This pretty Georgian silver caddy spoon is dated Birmingham 1825 and was made by Birmingham toy makers * James Collins. The scalloped rectangular bowl stipple engraved with a cornucopia and flowers. The flat handle with prick-dot borders. The back plain.

* from the late 18th to early 19th Century, Birmingham was the centre for the making of “toys”: small decorative objects from silver. They were produced in small family businesses and factories throughout Birmingham. They made a range of items including patch boxes, nutmeg graters, buckles, caddy spoons, vinaigrettes, snuff boxes and babies rattles.

Hallmarks:

JC for James Collins.

Duty Mark.

Lion Passant.

Birmingham Assay Mark.

Date letter "B" for 1825.

Condition:

Very good.

Length: 8cm / 3.2 inches

Bowl: 4cm x 3.5cm / 1.4 inches x 1.3 inches.
