Pair of 19thc Continental Gilt Hall Chairs

19th century
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Pair of 19thC Continental Gilt Hall Chairs are sure to make an impression wherever placed in the home. Standing on carved front legs, with shaped stretcher rails complete with a turned finial for decoration.

The profusely carved backs have a geometrically patterned surround, framing the highly detailed centre panels, which comprise swags and figures along with a multitude of other forms. The central person in each back panel is different, both being in traditional costume but adding further intrigue and interest.

The chairs are covered in a wine-coloured rich velvet. The gilding is showing some signs of age and wear to be expected from years of use. The chairs are structurally sound, with no movement in the frames.

A highly decorative pair of chairs of unusual form and design, that would make a statement when displayed.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Continental hall chairs from the 19th century were created for formal entryways in European residences, characteristically featuring high backrests embellished with elaborate relief carving, scrollwork, and classical motifs, often finished in leaf gilding.

These pieces were typically carved from hardwoods such as beech or pine, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding with gold leaf, complemented by horsehair padding and velvet or tapestry upholstery.

Authentic period gilding exhibits natural wear where the underlying clay base layer, known as bole, shows through on high points, accompanied by subtle cracking in the gesso surface known as craquelure.

Positioning a pair of hall chairs on either side of a contemporary console table or placing them in a wide entryway creates an architectural focal point that bridges historical craft with modern design.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting fragile leaf, and avoid water or solvent cleaners on gilded areas while vacuuming velvet upholstery using a brush attachment.
