This is a scarce Georgian, ''Newcastle'' light baluster wine glass dating from the mid-18th century, c1750. These glasses were originally thought to have been blown in Newcastle, England and then exported to The Netherlands for engraving (although this is a plain example). Recent excavations have proven them to have originated in The Netherlands even though they are blown in lead glass.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 270 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has a bell-shaped bowl measuring 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved under the rim with a band of birds and flora and sits on a thin light baluster stem consisting of a true baluster above an inverted baluster above a basal knop. The stem leads to a conical foot which also measures 8.5 cm (3.4 inches) in diameter. The glass is 18.8 cm (7.5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any obvious signs of restoration.
English lead glass weighing in at 200 g. (~ 7 oz.).
