Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine oil on artist board by Charles Wilde (1856-1905) titled Spring. The work beautifully depicts a springtime paddock with blossoming trees, lambs and ducks by a pond. The painting is technically highly competent with detailed brushwork and good composition. The whole is in completely untouched condition and is signed to the lower right. Charles Wilde (1856-1905) was a Nottingham artist and member of the Nottingham School of Art. He exhibited an amazing 113 works at Nottingham Castle and was elected a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1880. This work retains on the reverse the original exhibition label which shows it was one of Wilde’s works exhibited at Nottingham Castle. The painting retains the original gilt frame which is in amazing untouched condition. Wilde nearly always painted along the Trent in Nottingham and it is likely that this scene depicted is from that area. The whole has a wonderful feeling of time and place. C.1890.
