Boulle marquetry was developed in 17th-century France by Andre-Charles Boulle, cabinetmaker to King Louis XIV. The technique involves inlaying brass and tortoiseshell onto timber. During the 19th-century Second Empire period under Napoleon III, this style experienced a major revival, leading to the creation of decorative pier cabinets intended to sit against the narrow wall space between windows.

These cabinets are typically constructed from a wooden carcass faced with ebonised timber or fruitwood. The inlaid decoration combines cut brass sheet with natural or tinted tortoiseshell. Cast bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, are applied to the edges and corners, while the doors house glass panes.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-cut brass inlays that fit into tortoiseshell backings, often showing slight age-related lifting or movement due to the differing expansion rates of metal and shell. Original ormolu mounts will be heavy, cast, and secured with threaded screws rather than modern adhesives or uniform nails.
