7 Antique German Folk Art Hand-made Punch & Judy Puppets C. 1930

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Dreams Less Sweet

Charming vintage German folk art hand-made (carved & painted wooden limbs with cloth bodies) Punch & Judy puppets.

Lovely period folk art style, characterisations and colours.

C. 1910 - 1930 from a Punch & Judy theatre.

Very decorative as a folk art display.

Includes matching set of 5 carved & painted puppets with wooden heads, hands & legs, and cloth bodies. Depicting: Mr Punch, Judy, The Devil, Policeman and Judge. Combined with a Crocodile with wired jaw to open the mouth.

There is also a 2nd Mr Punch / or Clown puppet (far right in the photos), that matches the scale, cloth costumes and wooden hands of the others, but has composition head.

Good period condition. The aged wear adds to the character. The Judge only has one hand, and the 2nd Mr Punch doesn’t have legs (could easily be made).

Comes with a contemporary hand-made wooden display stand with poles for the 5 matching characters. A 6th could be added for the 2nd Mr Punch / Clown to display as a collection of 6 puppets + the Crocodile as shown.

The Punch and Judy show has roots in the 17th century Italian commedia dell’arte. The figure of Punch is derived from the Neapolitan stock character of Pulcinella (Punchinello). He is a variation on the same themes as the Lord of Misrule and the many Trickster figures found in mythologies across the world. Early darker adult themed characters such as The Devil were later taken out to appeal to younger audiences in the 20th Century.

Puppet H: 38 cm / Sitting on display stand H: 30 cm / Display Stand W: 41.5 x D: 10 cm.
