A beautifully detailed portrait captured by the entrance of a stately home,.
It shows a gentleman mounting a grey hunter, and his lady seated side saddle upon her chestnut horse.
It is interesting to study their attire which gives a good insight into hunt fashion of the time.
Note the horse’s docked tails which were fashionable in those days. Fox hunting used to commence around 11am and go on until dusk. Second horses were often used so that the followers could keep pace.
A truly classic scene which mirrors traditions of the period. Painted a year before the onset of World War I, a terrible time which would charge the world forever.

Walter Vernon flourished 1876 -1914. He was a late Victorian and Edwardian painter of racing scenes, horse portraits and pub views. He worked for many breweries and his work was illustrated.
