French Bronze Bust of Ajax, After Pierre Puget, 19th C.

19th century
Description

A fine and large bronze bust of Ajax, or Menelaus, after Pierre Puget, 19th Century. The patinated bronze, with gilt highlights, modelled after the head and shoulders of the figure, ‘Menelaus supporting the body of Patroclus’, currently in the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence.

He wears a Classical helmet cast with Satyrs and Mythical beasts. His shoulders covered by a robe, held by a circular gilt clasp.

Set upon the original square pedestal socle.

An excellent quality casting, with finely detailed chiselling, beneath the original patination.

Signed ‘P. Puget’ to the edge of the base.

Height – 43.2 cm, 17”.

Width – 23 cm, 9”.

Depth – 16 cm, 6 1/5”.

Condition – Excellent, original condition.
