19th Century French Oak Bench Upholstered in Vaas by Emma Grant

19th century
Description

This is a very stylish, late 19th century French hall bench. Upholstered beautifully in Vaas by Emma Grant. The Vaas fabric is inspired by a Dutch 18th century tin glazed ceramic Emma found years ago.

Made from oak with a great shaped stretcher. The quality is very high and the design is classic that I believe will work well in a great number of interiors. The shaped arm and tactile feel is what drew me to this in the first place as well as the back that tapers outward at the sides which is a wonderful detail.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in French country and manor homes, upholstered banquettes and benches provided formal yet comfortable seating in dining areas and entry halls. During the nineteenth century, cabinetmakers crafted solid oak frames combined with woven fabrics to suit both practical utility and decorative tastes.

Frames were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods such as French oak, walnut, or beech. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural fibres like linen, wool, or cotton, supported by webbing and horsehair stuffing.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery including mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved turned legs, and natural wear patterns along footrests and stretchers. Look for irregular tool marks and shrinkage consistent with aged hardwood.

A high-backed bench can serve as statement seating along a dining table, in a spacious hallway, or against a large expanse of wall. Pairing historical carved wood with contemporary patterned textiles creates visual contrast in minimalist or transitional spaces.

Dust timber frames regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish. Protect upholstery fabrics from direct sunlight to prevent fading and treat spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth without rubbing.
