This is a pair of Georgian, hand-blown, tall, composite stem candlesticks dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1770.
The candlesticks are in good condition for their age. They show the age related wear and tear to the rims of the feet consistent with some 250 years of use.
The candlesticks have rib-moulded cylinder-shaped candle holder bowls or sconces measuring 3.7 cm (1.5 inches) in diameter at the rims. The candlesticks come with two matching cut glass detachable sconces which sit inside the candle holders and were used to both protect the candle holders from the heat of the candles and to facilitate cleaning. The candle holders are vertically rib-moulded with eight slightly wrythened slices. The bowls sit on knops containing air tears and eight-sided moulded pedestal stems with diamonds to the shoulders. The stems end in three collars and a second hourglass shaped teared knop. The stems lead to domed and cut feet which measure 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in diameter and carry rough pontil marks to the undersides. The candlesticks are an impressive 25.5 cm (10.2 inches) in height.
One of the candle holders has been replaced at some time with a later version, probably made to order. There are the normal small flake chips to the undersides of the cut feet which we have tried to show in the relevant images, but none that impact the way they display. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration.
An impressive pair of candlesticks of practical height for current use. English lead glass. Each candlestick weighs 750 g. (~ 1 lb. 10 oz.).
