19th Century Italian Grand Tour Intaglios

18th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

A Set of 37 Grand Tour plaster intaglios

Each mounted and displayed within gilt carved mounts, the original walnut display case with blue paper lining and detachable lid.

Italian, circa 1780-1820

Walnut case: 7.5" (19cm) x 6" (16cm)

Plaster intaglios were inspired by intaglios carved into semi-precious stones and hardstones, which were traditionally used for signing messages and sealing letters. Intaglios grew in popularity during the time of the Grand Tour and were highly demanded by the wealthy aristocrats, consequently, artists created plaster intaglios, which acted as souvenirs of their travels in addition to being a reminder of the superb artworks and decorative pieces they had encountered all around the continent.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour plaster intaglios are decorative relief casts made from engraved gems, collected by aristocratic travellers during eighteenth and nineteenth-century tours across Europe, particularly Italy.

They were crafted by pressing fine plaster of Paris or liquid sulphur into moulds created from carved gemstone intaglios, often finished with gilded paper edges.

Authentic pieces feature crisp relief details depicting classical mythology or portrait heads, aged plaster patination, and gold-leafed or paper-bound rims set within trays or boxes.

They can be hung on narrow wall spaces, layered on bookshelf displays, or mounted in gallery walls alongside dark wood furniture and classical art.

Keep them in a dry environment behind glass to protect the delicate plaster from moisture, dust, and direct physical contact, dusting only with a soft dry brush.
