Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French writing table with a flat, leather-lined top and a frieze containing shallow drawers. First introduced in the late 17th century, it was designed to be placed in the centre of a room rather than against a wall.

Traditional construction features a timber carcass veneered with fine woods such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood arranged in marquetry or parquetry patterns. Additional features include cast gilt bronze ormolu mounts and an inset leather writing surface.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-cut joinery, thick wood veneers, heavy cast ormolu mounts fixed with period screws, and age-appropriate wear on the leather writing insert and drawer runners.

A bureau plat functions well as a central executive desk in a home office or study, or as a focal table in a large living area paired with modern seating and subtle lighting.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Dust wood and gilt mounts with a soft dry cloth, and condition the leather writing inset periodically with specialised leather balm.
