Petrified wood is a fossil formed when organic plant material is buried under sediment and deprived of oxygen. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater flows through the organic structure, replacing the original plant cells with silicates such as chalcedony, quartz, or opal.

The colour variations in fossilised wood depend on the mineral trace elements present during petrifaction. Iron oxides create red, brown, and yellow tones, carbon creates black shades, manganese produces pink or orange hues, and cobalt or copper result in green and blue accents.

Authentic petrified wood retains original anatomical structures such as tree bark textures, growth rings, and wood grain patterns. True mineralised specimens are exceptionally heavy, feel cold to the touch, and feature a Mohs hardness rating typically between 6.5 and 7.

A mounted petrified wood specimen is commonly displayed on a sideboard, desk, or open shelving as a focal geological object. Its organic contours and earth tones contrast against neutral walls, contemporary glass, brass, or dark timber joinery.
