A Set of Antique Vases, Donath &Co., Dresden, Late 19th Century.

19th century
Description

A couple of antique flute-shaped vases richly decorated with garden flowers composition. Snow-white fine porcelain, wholly hand painted by sprays of flowers within gilt borders and green fish scale reserves on the upper and lower edges. The images of the flowers run around the circumference of the vases. It is the classical decoration by Dresden style flowers with gold accents near the rims. The shape of the vases is rare and is a technical achievement of the time.

The two vases appear to have been made by the craftsmen of Donath &Co. Donath & Co, Dresden, Germany, was founded in 1872. The studio decorated porcelain in a style that was a mixture of Dresden and Viennese flower paintings. Dresden was the center for the era and rise of "Romanticism" during the 19th century. This artistic, cultural and intellectual movement, which attracted painters, sculptors, poets, philosophers and porcelain decorators alike. In 1883, in response to the exciting developments happening all around them, four prominent ceramic decorators registered the famous blue crown Dresden mark, and the widely popular "Dresden style" was born. Dresden china is often described as "rococo revival" style. Dresden housed over 200 painting shops; but the Dresden style is always associated with wares bearing the blue crown mark first registered by Richard Klemm, Donath & Co., Oswald Lorenz, and Adolph Hamann in 1883 and the type of wares they produced. The style they employed used a mixture of Meissen and Vienna flower and figure painting.
