A late Victorian figured pollard oak pedestal desk with a generous kneehole – recently replaced inset leather over finely graduated mahogany lined drawers with ''Brown Oak'' panels and applied mouldings that retain their original brass handles.

Brown oak is technically not a distinct species of oak, but rather refers to oak that has been infected with a fungus. This fungus has the effect of turning the wood a deep brown colour. Once the wood has been cut and dried, the fungus dies, leaving a rich brown wood.
