Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese export travelling trunks were manufactured in port cities such as Canton during the 18th and 19th centuries specifically for Western merchants and military officers. Typically constructed with camphor wood frames and wrapped in leather with decorative brass studding, these trunks were designed to endure long sea voyages while protecting contents from pests and dampness.

These trunks were built around a wooden carcass, frequently made from aromatic camphor wood to deter insects. The exterior was encased in thick leather hide, secured at the corners and seams with brass brackets, straps, and closely spaced brass studs that provided both structural reinforcement and decorative embellishment.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut joinery inside the wooden frame, camphor wood interiors, and hand-hammered brass studding with subtle irregularities in placement. Look for age-appropriate wear on the leather, patinated brass hardware, and original escutcheons engineered to accommodate period lock mechanisms.

An antique leather trunk serves as a functional coffee table in a modern living space, or as storage at the foot of a bed. Positioned in a hallway or lounge, its rich leather texture and brass metalwork create a grounding focal point alongside contemporary upholstery and modern art.

Keep the trunk positioned away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent the leather from drying out or cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and apply a specialized leather conservation wax sparingly to nourish the hide and preserve the patinated finish.
