Edwardian Pierced Silver Wine Bottle Coaster D & J Welby 1905

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Fancy Fox

An attractive, fine quality Edwardian silver bottle coaster with cast gadrooned rim, ornately pierced walls reserving a vacant circular cartouche and with a beaded rim above the foot. Fitted with a turned wooden base. Hallmarked for London 1905, makers Daniel & John Welby.

It measures 13cm (5 1/8'') wide across the rim and 12.1cm (4 3/4'') inside the base and 3.5cm (1 3/8'') high. It weighs 153g in total with a separate silver weight of 107g / 3.4ozt.

In excellent condition with no damage or repairs and minimal handling wear to the silver. The wooden base has minor signs of wear. Also, unusually it is not attached to the frame, and doesn''t appear ever to have been, so it is possibly a replacement but certainly made for the coaster and a perfect fit. It could clearly be permanently attached very easily should it be wished but it is much easier to clean etc. as it is and the silver inside is immaculate so I am leaving that decision to its future owner.
