Antique Caucasian Kuba Region Runner / Long Rug of Outstanding Design, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 7ft 3in x 3ft 3in (220 x 104cm).

Antique Caucasian Kuba region long rug / runner of outstanding design.

Circa 1890.

The rug has four large colourful medallions on a dark indigo ground, this style of medallion is found on a well known group of rugs attributed to the kuba region of the north eastern Caucasus, the weavers are of Shirvan origin. The field is filled with many small animals and birds, along with other tribal design elements. A feature of this rug is the main border, which is a stylised floral arabesque, the use of red against the light indigo blue makes this particularly striking. This border design is also associated with a very small group of rugs, usually of early date from the Kuba region.

The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

This is an outstanding example of Caucasian weaving, a sought after and collectible rug.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the north-eastern Caucasus during the nineteenth century, Kuba rugs were handcrafted by village weavers renowned for their fine knotting techniques, dense construction, and detailed geometric iconography.

Authentic Caucasian runners were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces feature a fine, low wool pile, natural colour variation known as abrash, structural wool warps, and precise geometric motifs such as crab borders and central medallions.

Positioned in hallways, entry corridors, or alongside contemporary furniture, the rich navy blue and red tones add historical depth, pattern, and warmth to modern minimalist spaces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, use a quality underlay to prevent friction wear, rotate the runner regularly to even out light exposure, and rely on professional rug specialists for cleaning.
